Burkhanov, Shukur

Born Sept. 15, 1910, in Tashkent. Soviet Uzbek actor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1959). Member of the CPSU since 1943.

In 1928, Burkhanov joined the company of the State Uzbek Drama Theater (now the Khamza Theater, Tashkent). The actor’s work is diverse: romantic, vivid, spirited characters; delicate, psychologically complex images; deep dramatism; and sharply satirical characterization are congenial to him. His roles include Guliam (Iashen’s Honor and Love), Gafur (Khamza’s The Landowner and the Hired Man), General Rakhimov (Iashen’s play of that name), Fakhad (Legend About Love by Khikment), the mayor (Gogol’s The Inspector General), the hired man Iulchi (Holy Blood, after Aibek), Hamlet and Brutus (Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Julius Caesar), Voinitskii (Uncle Vanya by Chekhov), Ulugbek (Mirzo Ulugbek by Sheikhzade), and Oedipus (Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex). He portrayed V. I. Lenin in Pogodin’s Kremlin Chimes (1947) and Iashen’s Guiding Star (1957).

His film roles include Karabatyr (Takhir and Zukhra), director of the kolkhoz (Bitty-Bird), Ulugbek (Ulugbek’s Star), and Ialantush (Srorm Over Asia). Burkhanov received the Khamza State Prize of the Uzbek SSR (1964). He has been awarded 5 orders, as well as medals.
