Burkholderia cepacia Burkholderia cepaciaa bacterial species found in rotted onions and in clinical specimens; commonly found in respiratory secretions in patients with cystic fibrosis, it is frequently resistant to many antibiotics. Synonym(s): Pseudomonas cepaciaBurkholderia cepacia A group of at least 17 Pseudomonas-like gram-negative bacteria found in the environment—e.g., plants, water, soil and in hospital—which may colonise the respiratory tract.
Clinical findings
May cause life-threatening pneumonia in patients with cystic fibrosis, chronic granulomatous disease and lung transplants; B cepacia may also cause urinary tract infections and infect sterile body sites.
