Fick, August

(ou`go͝ost fĭk), 1833–1916, German philologist. Fick compiled the first comparative etymological dictionary of the Indo-European languages (1868).

Fick, August

Born May 5, 1833, in Petershagen; died Mar. 24, 1916, in Hildesheim. German philologist.

Fick studied at the University of Göttingen. He was a professor of comparative grammar at the University of Göttingen from 1876 to 1888 and at the University of Breslau from 1888 to 1891. He belonged to the Göttingen school of Indo-European linguistics. His primary works were in Indo-European etymology. Fick was also the author of works on ancient Greek epic and lyric poetry and on the phonetics and morphology of the Indo-European parent language.
