Burmese Rupee

Burmese Rupee

The former currency of Burma. For much of its history, the Burmese rupee was identical to the Indian rupee as both countries were British colonies. Before 1937, the only differences were the languages printed on the currencies. The rupee did not circulate during World War II, since Japan, which conquered Burma, issued its own colonial currency. In 1948, Burma became independent and issued its own rupee, but this was replaced by the Burmese kyat in 1952.
