[kən′tig] (genetics) A region of chromosome defined by its hybridization to one or more cloned deoxyribonucleic acid fragments from an overlapping array of clones. (cell and molecular biology) A group of cloned nucleotide sequences that are contiguous.

a contiguous set of overlapping DNA sequences, which assemble to form a defined region of the genome from which they derived. Contig formation is a necessary step in determining the sequence of an entire genome by the CLONE CONTIG SEQUENCING METHOD. See also GENOMICS.
