a type of POLYPLOID in which the number of chromosomes is doubled in a hybrid between two species. The resulting allotetraploid or amphidiploid is fertile since HOMOLOGOUS CHROMOSOMES of both types can now pair at MEIOSIS to produce viable GAMETES

Such a process has been important in the production of new species, particularly in plants. For example, the successful marshland grass Spartina anglica is a fertile allotetraploid developed from an infertile hybrid (S. townsendii) produced originally by a cross between S. alterniflora and S. maritima.
