Cugnot, Nicholas Joseph

Cugnot, Nicholas Joseph

Born Feb. 25, 1725, in Poid, in Meuse Department; died Oct. 2, 1804, in Paris. French inventor.

Cugnot was among the first to attempt the use of a steam engine for transportation purposes. In 1769–70 he built a steam carriage, which he proposed to use for transporting artillery (it was not adopted because of imperfections in its design; since 1800 it has been preserved at the Conservatory of Arts and Trades in Paris).
