In east-central WI; organized Dec 7, 1836 (prior to statehood) from a territorial county. Name Origin: For its location at the southern end of Lake Winnebago; French 'end of the lake,' transliterated from Wanikamiu, name of an Indian village, with the similar meaning 'farthest point of the lake.'
