certification of insanity

certification of insanity

A now historic documentary deposition that a person suffering from a mental disorder should be indefinitely physically detained. Certification was abolished in Britain in 1959 and replaced by a Mental Health Act which makes provision for compulsory admission to hospital for periods of observation of up to 28 days (Section 25), or for longer periods, if necessary (Section 26). This is done on application by the nearest relative or by the Mental Welfare Officer supported by the recommendation of two doctors.
