Prerevolutionary Russia and the USSR. The principal periodical publications in prerevolutionary Russia dealing with cultural anthropology were Etnograficheskii sbornik (Ethnographic Collection; issues 1–6; St. Petersburg, 1853–64), Zapiski Russkogo geo-graficheskogo obshchestva po otdeleniiu etnografii (Notes of the Ethnographic Division of the Russian Geographic Society; St. Petersburg, 1867–1917), Trudy etnograficheskogo otdela Obshchestva liubitelei estestvoznaniia, antropologii i etnologii (Transactions of the Ethnographic Department of the Society of Lovers of Natural Science, Anthropology, and Ethnology; Moscow, 1868–1913), and the journals Etnograficheskoe obozrenie (Ethnographic Survey; Moscow, 1889–1916) and Zhivaia starina (Living Past; St. Petersburg, 1890–1917).

The principal periodical publications in the Soviet period are the journal Etnografiia (Ethnography; Moscow-Leningrad, 1926–30), the journal Sovetskaia etnografiia (Soviet Ethnography; Moscow, 1931–37 and since 1946), the collection of articles Sovetskaia etnografiia (Moscow-Leningrad, 1938-41), Trudy Instituta antropologii, etnografii i arkheologii (Transactions of the Institute of Anthropology, Ethnography, and Archaeology; Moscow-Leningrad, 1934–40), Trudy Instituía etnografii imeni N. N. Miklukho-Maklaia (Transactions of the N. N. Miklukho-Maklai Institute of Ethnography; new series, Moscow, since 1947), Kratkie soobshchenia Insliluta etnografii (Short Reports of the Institute of Ethnography; Moscow, 1946–63), Sbornik Muzeia antropologii i etnografii (Collection of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography; St. Petersburg [Leningrad], since 1900), the yearbook Rosy i narody (Races and Peoples; Moscow, since 1971), Etnohrafichnyi visnyk (Ethnographic Herald; Kiev, 1925–32), and Narodna Ivorchyst’ ta etnohrafiia (Folk Arts and Ethnography; Kiev, since 1957; published from 1925 to 1957 under various titles).
