the thesis (BELL, 1976) that unresolved conflicts exist between three fundamental ‘axial principles’ in modern CAPITALIST SOCIETIES, i.e., economic (technoeconomic efficiency), political (political and social equality) and cultural (individual self-expression and hedonistic fulfilment), and that central problems in modern societies have these as their source.
