De Forest, John

 

Born May 31, 1826, in Seymour, Conn.; died July 17, 1906, in New Haven. American writer.

De Forest took part in the Civil War (1861-65) on the Union side. He was the first to reflect this event, in his novel Miss Ravenel’s Conversion From Secession to Loyalty (1867), which centered on a young Southern woman imbued with abolitionist ideas. He depicted political corruption in the USA in his novels Honest John Vane (1875) and Playing the Mischief (1875).
