a city (until 1951, a settlement) in the Armenian SSR; a mountain-climatic and balneological health resort. Located on the Agstev River, a tributary of the Kura, at an elevation of 1,255-1,510 m, 40 km east of the Kirovakan railroad on the Tbilisi-Yerevan line and 77 km southwest of the Akstafa station on the Tbilisi-Baku line. Population, 16,000 (1970).

Dilizhan has warm summers, with average July temperatures of 19°C, and mild winters, with average January temperatures of −2°C. Annual precipitation totals nearly 540 mm. Dilizhan’ s therapeutic remedies include cold, carbonate hydrocarbonate sodium mineral springs, whose water has the following composition:

The mineral water is used for drinking and bottling. There are sanatoriums for patients with tuberculosis of the lungs and bones and with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Dilizhan has plants for bottling mineral water, the Impul’s Plant, furniture and clothing factories, a medical school, and a museum of local lore. A wildlife preserve is located in the vicinity of Dilizhan.
