Continuum of Vegetation

the unbrokenness of plant cover; it is manifested by a gradual change from one plant community to another neighboring one (spatial continuum) or by the succession in time of one community by another (temporal continuum). The concept of a continuum is disputed by some geobotanists because distinct boundaries can sometimes be seen between phytocoenoses because of marked changes in the relief or for other reasons. The concept arose in the 1920’s.
