Debelianov, Dimcho

Born Mar. 28, 1887 in Kopriv-shtitsa; died Oct. 2, 1916, and buried in Koprivshtitsa. Bulgarian poet.

Debelianov fought in World War I and was killed on the front. His works were first published in 1906. Debelianov was influenced by the aesthetic views of P. Slaveikov and P. Iavorov and subsequently by the French and Russian symbolists. The basic themes of his poetry are a tragic awareness of society’s contradictions and the dissonance of dream and reality. War is the theme of the poems “Night in Solonik” (1916), “The Old Bivouac” (1916), and “Killed” (1916, published, 1920).
