Cocarboxylasecocarboxylase[¦kō·kär′bäk·sə‚lās]Cocarboxylase(thiamine pyrophosphate), a pyrophosphoric ester of thiamine (vitamin B1); a coenzyme participating in the nonoxidative and oxidative decarboxylation of a-keto acids (during the conversion of pyruvic acid into acetyl coenzyme A) and in the formation and separation of keto sugars. Rupture of the C—C bond vicinal to the keto group of the substrate occurs in all cases. Cocarboxylase is assumed to participate in the process of phosphorylation. Cocarboxylase may catalyze certain reactions without the participation of its protein constituent. Cocarboxylase improves metabolic processes, reduces pain during stenocardia, has an antiarthritic effect, and reduces acidosis during diabetes. A cocarboxylase preparation serves as an intramuscular or intravenous injection in cases of diabetes mellitus, cardiac arrhythmia, insufficient coronary circulation, and mild forms of multiple sclerosis. cocarboxylase
