On the peninsula in northeast WI, bordered on west by Green Bay and on east by Lake Michigan; organized Feb 11,1851 from Brown County. Name Origin: Origin uncertain. A legendary incident involving Indians is said to be the reason the strait between Washington Island and the peninsula is named in French La Porte des Morts, 'Door of the Dead.' Or possibly "the door" refers to the entrance to Green Bay. The county later took the name from the strait.
