In southeastern corner of AZ; organized Feb 1, 1881 (prior to statehood) from Pima County. Name Origin: For the famous Chiricahua Apache chief (c. 1812-74), who conducted raids against the U.S. after brutal treatment by U.S. Army officers and surrendered in 1871
