Estonian Bacon Hog

a breed of hog raised for bacon. It was developed in Estonia by crossing local hogs primarily with boars of Danish, German, and Finnish breeds, as well as with Swedish Landraces. The breed was approved in 1961. Adult boars weigh 280–350 kg, and adult sows, 230–250 kg. The young on fattening weigh 100 kg at six months of age. The average daily weight gain is about 700 grams. Feed conversion per 1 kg of weight gain is 3.9–4 feed units. The fertility is 11–12 young per farrow. The Estonian bacon hog is raised in Estonia by the purebreeding method. It is used in commercial crossbreeding to improve the rapid maturation and meat qualities of other breeds.
