Barsukov, Valerii Leonidovich

 

Born Mar. 14, 1928, in Moscow. Soviet geologist and geochemist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976). Member of the CPSU since 1955.

Barsukov graduated from the Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute in 1951. In 1954 he joined the staff of the Institute of Geochemistry and Analytic Chemistry. He was appointed director of the institute in 1976.

Barsukov’s main works deal with the geochemistry of ore formation processes and of plutonic and lunar rocks, as well as with geochemical methods of searching for, evaluating, and forecasting useful mineral deposits. Barsukov described the formation mechanism of tin ore deposits and determined the main features of the formation chemistry of borate deposits.

Barsukov has been awarded two orders and various medals.
