Askew, Reubin (O'Donovan)

(1928– ) governor; born in Muskogee, Okla. After putting himself through college and law school on the G.I. Bill, he served in Florida legislature (Dem., 1959–71), opposing school segregation. As Florida's governor (1971–79) he initiated tax reform, improved the penal system, and established an environmental protection agency. A U.S. representative for international trade negotiations (1979–81), he returned to his law practice afterward.
