(see -tŭs) (Whale) An extensive but rather inconspicuous equatorial constellation near Orion, the brightest star being the 2nd-magnitude orange giant Diphda (β). It contains several Mira stars including the prototype Mira Ceti (Omicron [ō] Ceti), the flare star UV Ceti, the orange-red main-sequence star Tau (τ) Ceti, a close neighbor of the Sun (see Tau Ceti), and the Seyfert galaxy M77 (NGC 1068). Abbrev.: Cet; genitive form: Ceti; approx. position: RA l.5h, dec –10°; area: 1231 sq deg.
