Size: 41,972 acres.
Established: Administered under cooperative agreement with Bureau of Reclamation since February 11, 1965.
Location:In west-central Colorado, accessible via US 50 which runs the length of the recreation area between Montrose and Gunnison (200 miles southwest of Denver).
Facilities:Campgrounds (é), picnic area, rest rooms (é), groceries, restaurant/snacks, boat rental, boat ramp, visitor centers (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail.
Activities:Camping, hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, bird-watching, interpretive programs, boat tours.
Special Features:Three lakes -- Blue Mesa, Morrow Point, and Crystal -- extend for 40 miles along the Gunnison River. When full, Blue Mesa Lake, with a surface area of 14 square miles, is the largest lake in Colorado. Morrow Point Lake is the beginning of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and below, Crystal Lake is the site of the Gunnison Diversion Tunnel, a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
