Curiel, Eugenio

Born Dec. 11, 1912, in Trieste; died Feb. 24, 1945, in Milan. A figure in the Italian labor movement, one of the leaders of the Resistance in northern Italy (1943–45).

Curiel graduated from the University of Padua in 1933 and remained there as an instructor of physics and mathematics. In 1935 he helped organize an underground Communist cell at the university. He was arrested in 1939 and sentenced to five years in exile. Liberated in August 1943, after the fall of the fascist dictatorship, he became editor in chief of L’Unita and Nostra Lotta, the underground publications of the Communist Party. Curiel was the organizer and director of the Anti-Fascist Youth Front. He was murdered on a Milan street by fascists.
