Ceylon Moors
Moors, Ceylon
an ethnic group on Ceylon (Sri Lanka), descendants of the Arabs who settled on Ceylon between the seventh and 12th centuries and intermarried with Tamil and Sinhalese women. The Ceylon Moors, numbering more than 600,000 (1970, estimate), live mainly in the coastal cities. They speak Sinhalese or Tamil, although Arabic is also widely used in everyday life, and are Sunni Muslim. Their traditional occupations are trade and crafts; some own large tracts of land, which they lease.
