(sĕr`rə thə əshtrā`lə), mountain range, central Portugal. It rises to 6,532 ft (1,991 m) in Malhão da Estrela, Portugal's highest peak. The range is an important pastoral region. The peaks have smooth contours and the slopes are steep and deeply dissected by rivers. The range has meadows and Mediterranean shrub and forest vegetation. There are deposits of tungsten (at Panasqueira), uranium (near Guarda), and tin.
