Tourette syndrome

A neurological disorder marked by repetitive motor and verbal tics. Those affected blink, jerk, grunt, clear their throats, swing their arms, grasp or clasp others, have obsessive-compulsive behaviors, or use verbal expletives uncontrollably. In some instances, those affected can control the urge to use these mannerisms while in public, but they may express them vigorously when alone. The condition often appears in several family members. It may be caused by a disorder of dopamine uptake in the basal ganglia. Dopamine-blocking drugs such as haloperidol can be used to treat this disorder. Synonym: Gilles de la Tourette syndrome; Tourette disorder See: tic

Tourette syndrome triad

Clustering of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and tics in a patient or family.
