control zone[kən′trōl ‚zōn] (navigation) An airspace of defined dimensions extended upward from the surface to include one or more airports, and within which rules additional to those governing flight in control areas apply for the protection of traffic. Also known as air-traffic control zone. control zoneA controlled airspace extending upward from the surface of the earth to a specified upper limit (ICAO). The lateral limits of a controlled zone extend to at least 5 NM (9.3 km) from the center of the associated aerodrome(s) in the directions from which approaches may be made. The lateral limits of a controlled zone encompass at least those portions of the airspace that are not within control areas containing the path of IFR (instrument flight rules) flights arriving at and departing from aerodromes to be used in IMC (instrument meteorological conditions).
