[i′mish·ən spek′träm·əd·ər] (spectroscopy) A spectrometer that measures percent concentrations of preselected elements in samples of metals and other materials; when the sample is vaporized by an electric spark or arc, the characteristic wavelengths of light emitted by each element are measured with a diffraction grating and an array of photodetectors.
