Buzhinskii, Gavriil
Birth date unknown; died in 1731. Russian church figure, writer, and translator. In 1718 he became hieromonk of the fleet. With the formation of the Church Synod, Buzhinskii became a member, and, in 1724, protector of all the schools and printing shops. In 1726 he became bishop of Riazan’ and Murom. At the urging of Peter I, he translated S. Pufendorf’s Introduction to European History (translated from Latin, with Buzhinskii’s foreword, 1718) and On the Duties of Man and Citizen According to Natural Law (translated from Latin, 1726) and Theatron, or The Historical Survey of World History… From the Beginning of the World to the Year 1680 (1724). Buzhinskii’s sermons, with eulogies of Peter I and his activity (1768), and some theological works (including Thanksgiving Service to God the Lord in Memory of the Peace Concluded Between the Empire of Russia and the Crown of Sweden, 1725) were published several times.
