Size: 999 acres.
Established: Authorized on August 30, 1964; established on July 29, 1972.
Location:In southeastern Arizona, 116 miles east of Tucson. From Wilcox (on I-10), go 22 miles south on AZ 186 and then onto dirt road leading east into Apache Pass; from Bowie (on I-10), drive south 12 miles to Apache Pass.
Facilities:Rest rooms (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail.
Activities:Hiking, birdwatching, wildlife viewing.
Special Features:Established in 1862, this fort was the focal point of militaryoperations against Geronimo and his band of Apaches, eventuallyculminating in the surrender of Geronimo in 1886 and the banishment ofthe Chiricahuas to Florida and Alabama. The site also preserves part ofthe Butterfield Overland Mail Route. The ruins can be reached only bytrail.
