Fort Clark Trading Post State Historic Site
Location:1.25 miles west of the town of Fort Clark in Mercer County.
Facilities:Historic site, interpretive signs, picnic area, observation deck, modern restrooms.
Activities:Self-guided tours (May 16-September 15).
Special Features:Site protects the archeological remains of a large earthlodge village,cemetery, and two fur trade posts (Fort Clark Trading Post andPrimeau's Post). Site is one of the most important archeological sitesin the state because of its well-preserved record of the fur trade andbecause it was the scene of devastating smallpox and cholera epidemicsthat decimated most of the inhabitants of a Mandan and later an ArikaraIndian village.
