behavioural observation scale

behavioural observation scale (BOS)

a scale upon which observed behaviour can be graded. For example, the degree to which an individual consults with his colleagues can be graded from ‘never’ through to ‘always’. This method of rating behaviour can be used where behaviour is observed as part of RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION and where behaviour is a subject of PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL. Such scales are easy to compile but observation of behaviour may be difficult (it may not be possible to scrutinize all relevant behaviour), and it can be difficult to exclude the observer's subjective opinion of the nature of the behaviour observed.
