Emory, William H. (Hemsley)

(1811–87) army officer, explorer; born in Queen Annes County, Md. He was a West Point graduate in the Topographical Engineers who helped survey the U.S.–Canada (1844–46) and the U.S.–Mexico (1848–57) boundaries. He commanded the Indian Territory (1861), held western commands during the Civil War, and retired as a brigadier general (1876).
