Byrd Scientific Station

antarctic interior scientific station of the USA in Marie Byrd Land, at 80° 01’ S lat. and 119° 32’ W long. It was opened on Jan. 1, 1957, as part of the International Geophysical Year. The station is located on a glacier plateau at an altitude of 1, 530 m above sea level, 660 km from the coast. Between 20 and 36 people work at the station in the winter. The station conducts aerometeorological, geophysical, glaciological, and other observations. In the summer the Byrd Scientific Station has served as a base for research expeditions in the Western Antarctic. It was named after R. Byrd.
