chalazion[kə′lāz·ē·ən] (medicine) A small tumor of the eyelid formed by retention of tarsal gland secretions. Also known as a Meibomian cyst. Chalazion a chronic inflammation in the meibomian glands resulting in the formation of a solid nodule, 5–6 mm or more in size, lodged within the eyelid and deforming it. The nodule sometimes bursts open of its own accord. The condition is treated by applying an ointment of yellow mercury or potassium iodide; when large, the nodules may be removed by surgical means. chalazionenUK
chalazion [kah-la´ze-on] (pl. chala´zia, chalazions) (Gr.) a small eyelid mass resulting from chronic inflammation of a meibomian gland; it can sometimes be treated at home with the application of hot compresses, but while this method is usually successful with a sty, a similar infection that has not yet formed a cyst, chalazion often requires incision and drainage. Synonym(s): hordeolum internumchalazion A chronic inflammatory lipogranuloma due to retention of the secretion (such as blocked ducts) of a meibomian gland in the tarsus of an eyelid. It is characterized by a gradual painless swelling of the gland without marked inflammatory signs and sometimes astigmatism which is induced by the cyst pressing on the cornea (Fig. C5). Small chalazia may disappear spontaneously but large ones usually have to be incised and curetted (i.e. removal of the pus with a scraper) through a tarsal incision. Resolution may also occur after local injection of a corticosteroid drug (e.g. dexamethasone or triamcinolone). Syn. meibomian cyst (although it is not a true cyst because its walls are made of granulomatous tissue and not lined with epithelium).
