Flag Raising

(1) The daily ceremony of hoisting the naval flag on warships. In the Soviet Navy the flag is raised at 8 A.M. and on holidays at 9 A.M. It may be done in the ordinary way or ceremonially, with a call of all hands on deck, an honor guard, and a band on the upper deck. On anchored first- or second-class ships, the jack is hoisted simultaneously with the flag. The flag and the jack are lowered at sunset, and in the arctic seas at an hour set by the fleet commander.

(2) Flag-raising ceremonies are carried out also at salutes and festivities, daily in Pioneer camps, at stadiums on the opening of the sports season or at sports festivals, and at wharfs or river stations on the opening of navigation.
