Fontainebleau State Park
Location:Southeast of Mandeville in Saint Tammany Parish on US 190, on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain.
Facilities:23 premium campsites (19 pull-through sites and 4 campsites withsewerage hookups, all with water and electrical hookup), 103 improvedcampsites, 37 unimproved campsites, primitive group camping area,comfort stations, picnic area, group shelters, nature trail, swimmingbeach, sailboat ramp, playground. Availability of some facilities maybe affected by status of hurricane cleanup and reconstruction efforts.
Activities:Camping, sailing, fishing, swimming, hiking, bicycling, wildlife viewing, birding, interpretive programs.
Special Features:Near the park entrance are crumbling ruins of an old sugar mill builtin 1829. Bernard de Marigny de Mandeville developed the area as a sugarplantation, and the income from it helped support his lavish lifestyle.He named his large land holdingFontainebleau after the forest near Paris. A portion of the 31-mileTammany Trace rails-to-trails route passes through the park.
