Cook, Ebenezer,
fl. 1708, American author. Virtually nothing is known about his life. He is the author of The Sot-Weed Factor (1708), a satirical poem concerning an Englishman's visit to Maryland. Sotweed Redivivus (1730), a treatise on tobacco production, is also attributed to him. Cook is the central character in The Sot-Weed Factor (1960), a novel by John BarthBarth, John, 1930–, American writer, b. Cambridge, Md. He attended Johns Hopkins (B.A. 1951, M.A. 1952), and, beginning in 1973, taught writing at its graduate school for nearly 20 years.
