Egon Rannet

Rannet, Egon

Born Nov. 16 (29), 1911, in Tallinn; Soviet Estonian writer. Honored Writer of the Estonian SSR (1961).

Rannet fought in the Great Patriotic War (194–45). He began his literary career in the late 1940’s. In 1954 he published the documentary novella Road of the Strong. He is the author of the plays Conscience (1956; Russian translation, 1957), The Prodigal Son (1958), The Poachers (1960), Geese (1964), The Chalice and the Snake (1966), The Blood-red Rose (1967), and The Criminal Tango (1968), notable for their sharp conflicts and expressive characters. In 1972 he published the first book of the novel Stones and Bread. Rannet has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
