Location:About 10 miles south of Cokeville, Wyoming, on State Highway 30.
Facilities:None; still in acquisition stages.
Special Features:The refuge features a unique diversity of wildlife, but the climate can be harsh. At 6,200 feet above sea level, the frost-free season is only 60-70 days long. The semi-arid climate yields an average of 12.05 inches of precipitation annually. Temperatures are often below zero degrees Fahrenheit in the winter, but they can exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer.
Habitats: A 20-mile stretch of the Bear River and its associated wetlands and uplands. The approved acquisition boundary totals 26,657 acres; to date 7,483 acres have been purchased or are protected through conservation easements.
Access: Not yet open to public use.
Wild life: Nesting waterfowl and colony-nesting bird species including white-faced ibis and black terns, also antelope, elk, and mule deer.
