Agoncillo, Teodoro

Born 1914. Philippine historian; professor at the University of the Philippines in Manila. His works on the national liberation struggle of 1896–1901 started a new trend in writing Philippine history, which tries to refute the biased interpretation of Philippine history by reactionary Spanish and American scholars. Agoncillo and his followers take a patriotic stand, make a social and economic analysis of historical phenomena, and emphasize the decisive role of the popular masses in history.
