Delphinidae[del′fin·ə‚dē] (vertebrate zoology) A family of aquatic mammals in the order Cetacea; includes the dolphins. Delphinidae a family of mammals of the suborder Odonceti (toothed whales). Delphinoids measure up to 10 m long. Their throats lack grooves (longitudinal pleats), and the caudal fins have a deep indentation on the rear edge. The family Delphinidae comprises 22 genera, which include 50 species. In the USSR, 14 genera (17 species) are found, all belonging to two subfamilies. Delphinapterinae and Delphininae. The former is further subdivided into two genera, that of the belugas and that of the narwhals, consisting of one species each.
