Cooley Charles

(1864-1929) US sociologist best known for his concept of the LOOKING-GLASS SELF. This theory, about the formulation and maintenance of the personality as reflected in the judgements (both real and imagined) of others, was developed by G. H. MEAD and the symbolic interactionists. Cooley was also responsible for making the distinction between the primary and secondary group (see PRIMARY group). In general, his sociology (Social Organisation, 1909) shared the CHICAGO SCHOOL s concern with the relationship between the SELF and the social GROUP. See also SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONISM.
