Chancellor, John

(1927– ) television correspondent/anchorman; born in Chicago, Ill. Originally a Chicago Sun Times copy boy, he became a television reporter for National Broadcasting Company (NBC) local WMAQ in the 1950s. By 1958, he was NBC Vienna bureau chief, covering Soviet-American relations. Briefly Today show host (1961–62), he was the first working journalist to serve as Voice of America director (1965–67). He became NBC nightly news anchor (1970–82), appearing subsequently as a commentator.
