Established: 1935.
Location:At the southeastern tip of the Mississippi River Delta, 60 miles southeast of New Orleans.
Facilities:Visitor contact station.
Activities:Boating, canoeing, camping, fishing, hunting.
Special Features:Delta NWR is an extremely important nursery area for both fresh and saltwater species of fish and shellfish. Tens of thousands of wintering waterfowl take advantage of the rich food resources found in the delta.
Habitats: 49,000 acres of freshwater and brackish marsh, shallow ponds, channels, and bayous.
Access: Open year round during daylight hours. Access is by boat only.
Wild life: Greater and lesser yellowlegs, long-billed dowitchers, dunlins, western sandpipers, northern harriers, red-tailed hawks, alligators, deer, and swamp rabbits.
