, where her novels are set. They are marked by a didactic tone and sentimental plots, reflecting regional life and Caballero's own traditionalism. The first novel, La Gaviota (1849, tr. The Sea Gull, 1864), influenced the modern Spanish novel of customs.

Caballero, Fernán

 

(pen name of Cecilia Böhl de Fáber). Born Dec. 25, 1796, in Morges, Switzerland; died Apr. 7, 1877, in Seville. Spanish writer.

Fernán Caballero published an anthology of Andalusian folklore entitled National Pictures (1862). In her novel The Seagull (1848), which contains elements of realism, she portrayed a strong woman destroyed by bourgeois society. She also wrote the novels Clemencia (1852) and The Alvareda Family (1856).
