Cabinet Schools

schools that arose in Russia on cabinet lands during the second half of the 18th century. They were under the direct supervision of the office of the tsar, the Cabinet of His Imperial Majesty. The school at the silver smeltery in Nerchinsk, founded in 1761, was a school of this type. The principal function of the cabinet schools was the training of the children of workers and office employees for various lower-skilled positions at factories. The most experienced workmen at factories and mines joined the teaching staffs of these schools. Beginning in the late 19th century, cabinet schools were placed under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Public Education.
