Sidorov, Arkadii Lavrovich

Born Jan. 27 (Feb. 8), 1900, in the city of Pochinki, in what is now Gorky Oblast; died Mar. 11, 1966, in Moscow. Soviet historian. Doctor of historical sciences (1943); professor. Member of the CPSU from 1920.

Sidorov graduated from the la. M. Sverdlov Communist University in 1923 and from the Institute of the Red Professors in 1928. He opposed in the press the Menshevik and Socialist Revolutionary concepts of Russia’s history. From 1929 to 1936 he engaged in party work in Nizhny Novgorod, Vladivostok, and Khabarovsk. He became involved in scientific and pedagogical work in Moscow beginning in 1937. Sidorov was pro-rector of Moscow State University from 1948 to 1952. From 1953 to 1959 he was director of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He was a member of the editorial board of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia and the Soviet Historical Encyclopedia.

Sidorov initiated the extensive study of the history of imperialism in Russia, as well as the publication of documents on the Revolution of 1905–07 (18 volumes) and on the Great October Revolution (ten volumes). He was awarded two orders.
