Pudovik, Arkadii Nikolaevich

Born Mar. 2 (15), 1916, in Tsivil’sk in what is now the Chuvash ASSR. Soviet chemist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1964). Member of the CPSU since 1953.

Pudovik graduated from the University of Kazan in 1938 and completed his graduate study there in 1941. He worked at a plant in Kazan from 1941 until 1945, when he began working at the University of Kazan. In 1946, maintaining his position at the university, he began working at the A. E. Arbuzov Institute of Organic and Physical Chemistry of the Kazan branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and in 1971 he became the institute’s director.

Pudovik’s main works have dealt with the chemistry of the organophosphates. Pudovik developed a new method for synthesizing the esters of the phosphonic acids and discovered the phosphonate-phosphate rearrangement as well as the thermal rearrangement of the allyl and propargyl esters of phosphorous acid (the acetylene-allene diene rearrangement). Using electrophilic reagents that do not contain halogen atoms, Pudovik has studied numerous reactions of phosphorous acid esters, amidophosphites, and mixed anhydrides. He has also obtained many new types of phosphorus-containing monomers and related polymers. Pudovik has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and several medals.
